Guess the Movie from the Quote
Guess the Movie shows you a line of dialogue and four films it could belong to. Some are lines you have known since childhood. Others you will recognise instantly without being able to place the film, which is the more interesting half of the game.
There is a second layer of difficulty that catches almost everyone: a great many famous film lines are not quite what people think they are. The version in circulation is usually shorter, smoother and more self contained than the version actually spoken, and we use the real one.
How to play
The Daily Challenge is five quotes, the same five for every player worldwide, resetting at local midnight. Free Play is unlimited and never affects your streak, and the archive keeps the previous 30 days playable. Each answer reveals the correct film immediately.
What is in the deck
250 lines drawn from across film history and across genres: crime and gangster pictures, science fiction, westerns, comedies, thrillers, animation and drama. Some are the canonical quotations that appear on every list of great film dialogue. Others are lines that are widely recognised without being famous, which is where the deck gets its difficulty.
Real dialogue, not quotation sites
Every line is checked against the film's actual dialogue rather than quotation aggregators, which recycle each other's misquotes at scale. Where a well known misquote exists, the real line is the question, and the misquote frequently becomes one of the wrong answers, because telling those apart is most of the skill.

Six ways to place a line
- Read the register. Studio era dialogue is formal and complete; later American dialogue is looser and more profane. Vocabulary dates a line within a couple of decades.
- Ask who could say it. Many lines are unremarkable on the page. What is not unremarkable is the kind of character who speaks that way, which usually points to a genre.
- Distrust the perfect version. If one option is the polished sentence you have heard a hundred times, and another is slightly clumsier, the clumsier one is often the real line.
- Use the decoys. In a well built question the wrong answers come from a similar era or genre. An option far outside the group is usually filler.
- Listen for the turning point. Quotable lines cluster around revelations, threats, refusals and last words. Working out which beat of a story a line belongs to narrows the field.
- Answer the obvious ones fast. Roughly half of any deck is canonical. Spend your thinking time on the rest.
Practice one era at a time
Film dialogue dates itself. Register, vocabulary and what a character is allowed to say bracket a quotation to within about a decade before you have thought about the plot, which makes era the most useful thing to practise. Each set below is a ten question round drawn from the same 250 quotations, with a written piece on what changed in that period. Topic sets are practice only and never touch your streak.

Why is the quote different from how I remember it?
Because famous film lines are misquoted with remarkable consistency. Memory stores meaning rather than exact wording and then reconstructs a smoother, more self contained sentence. We use the real line, and the popular misquote often appears as one of the wrong answers.
Do you include television quotes?
No. This is a film game. An earlier version of the dataset contained two television lines presented as film dialogue; both were removed and the correction is listed in our release notes.
Is Guess the Movie free?
Yes. No account and no login, with statistics stored on your own device.
Are the quotes only from famous films?
Mostly, but not exclusively. A deck of nothing but the twenty most quoted lines in cinema would be over in a week.
