The decade of the high concept
Something specific happened to film dialogue in the 1980s, and it was commercial rather than artistic. Studios began buying pitches that could be described in a single sentence, a practice usually called high concept, and marketing departments started building campaigns around a line rather than a story. Scripts responded. Compare the dialogue in this set with the New Hollywood films of the previous decade and the difference is immediate: seventies dialogue circles, hesitates and overlaps, while eighties dialogue lands.
That is why this is the easiest era in the whole game to score well on without having seen very much. The lines were built to survive being quoted by someone who has not seen the film, which is precisely the situation you are in.
“Luke, I am your father” is not the line. In The Empire Strikes Back, Vader says “No, I am your father.” The name was never in it. The misquote almost certainly persists because the correct version is meaningless out of context: without the preceding accusation, “No” has nothing to answer, so quoters unconsciously repair the sentence by inserting the name. It is the single most reliable example of how quotations get edited by the crowd to make sense on their own.

The flop that became a classic
The Princess Bride did modest business on release in 1987. The studio reportedly struggled to market a film that was a fairy tale, a comedy, a romance and a swashbuckler at once, and the campaign never settled on which one it was selling. What rescued it was home video and cable television, where a film can be discovered repeatedly over a decade rather than in a single opening weekend. Several of the most quoted lines of the 1980s come from a picture that most people did not see in a cinema.
The same mechanism explains why the decade's quotable canon does not match its box office. The highest grossing films of the era are well represented here, but so are pictures that found their audience slowly, which is a pattern that essentially stopped being possible once the theatrical window collapsed.
