Guess the Song from the Lyrics
Guess the Song gives you a fragment of a lyric and four songs it might belong to. Anyone who has ever known a chorus perfectly while being unable to name the artist will find it uncomfortably familiar.
The gap between recognising something and being able to name it is the whole game. Lyrics are stored in memory with their melody attached, so a line that means nothing on the page frequently snaps into place the moment you hear it in your head. Reading is the wrong channel; singing is the right one.
How to play
The Daily Challenge is five lyric fragments, identical for every player on a given day, resetting at local midnight. Free Play is unlimited and never affects your streak, and the archive keeps the last 30 days playable. Each answer reveals the correct song and artist immediately.
What is in the deck
250 songs across several decades and a deliberately wide range of genres, from stadium rock and Motown to modern pop, country and hip hop. The spread is intentional: a deck weighted to one era would reward age rather than knowledge, and would make half the questions unplayable for half the audience.
Lyrics and copyright
Song lyrics are protected work. We use short, identifiable fragments only, always attributed to artist and title, and never more than identification requires. Artist and title credits are checked against release information rather than lyric aggregator sites.
Six things that help
- Sing it, do not read it. Retrieval works best through the channel the memory was encoded in, and for songs that channel is melodic.
- Work out whether it is a verse or a chorus. Chorus lines are short, general and usually contain the title. Verse lines are longer, more specific and often narrative.
- Date the language. Slang, technology and courtship conventions bracket a song quickly. Letters, payphones, mixtapes and texting each point to a different decade.
- Read the genre in the sentence shape. Country, soul, hip hop and modern pop have characteristic vocabulary and rhythms. Register alone often eliminates two options.
- Look at the title in each option. Hooks usually contain the title, so a fragment that reads like a hook can often be matched to the option whose title fits it.
- Beware of the line you have been mishearing. Almost everyone carries a few confidently wrong lyrics, a phenomenon with its own name, the mondegreen. If a fragment looks unfamiliar in print, you may know it perfectly in a different form.
Practice one artist at a time
A single artist set is a different exercise from the daily challenge: every wrong option comes from the same catalogue, so you cannot eliminate by genre or era and have to know the songs. Topic sets are practice only and never touch your streak.
