Release Notes and Corrections

Every release, what changed, and every correction made to the question datasets with the reason for it. If you have found a wrong answer, the contact page reaches us, and our sourcing and corrections policy explains what happens next.

2.21.0 (August 2026)

  • Ten more topic practice sets, so all six games now have them. Guess the Movie by era (1937 to 1979, the 1980s, the 1990s, the 2000s, 2010 onwards), Guess the Year by subject (history, technology, science and space), plus The Beatles and Elon Musk.
  • Correction. Guess the Year asked when the Paris Climate Agreement was signed and gave the answer as 2015. The agreement was adopted in December 2015 but was not opened for signature until April 2016, so the question was wrong as written. It has been replaced with a different 2015 event, and the separate question about the agreement being adopted in 2015, which is correct, remains.
  • Correction. Guess the Year contained the same fact twice, as “Airbnb was founded” and “Airbnb was launched”, both answered 2008. One has been replaced.

2.20.0 (August 2026)

  • Added twelve topic practice sets. Who Said It is now also playable by the kind of person being quoted (leaders and activists, writers and poets, scientists and inventors, founders and business, athletes and coaches, philosophers and proverbs), and Guess the Capital by continent (Africa, Europe, Asia, North America and the Caribbean, Oceania, South America).
  • Each set is a ten question round drawn from the existing dataset, published with an original written piece on that subject. Topic sets are practice only: they never touch your daily streak or your statistics, which continue to come from the daily challenge alone.
  • Correction. Who Said It attributed “we are what we repeatedly do; excellence, then, is not an act but a habit” to Aristotle and cited the Nicomachean Ethics as its source. The sentiment is Aristotle’s, but that wording is Will Durant’s, written in The Story of Philosophy in 1926 as a summary of Aristotle in Durant’s own prose. Citing the Ethics for a twentieth century paraphrase was wrong, so the question has been replaced with a line the Ethics does contain.

2.19.0 (August 2026)

  • Our analytics tag was only present on the home page and the six game pages. It is now on every page of the site, including the guides, this page and the legal pages, which is what the privacy policy has always described. Nothing new is collected: the same anonymous traffic measurement now covers the pages it had been missing.
  • As a result we can finally tell which guides people actually read, which is what decides what gets written next.

2.18.0 and 2.18.1 (August 2026)

  • The guides section was rewritten and expanded from six articles to nine, roughly five times the previous length. New: How to Actually Get Better at Trivia, Why Daily Puzzle Games Took Over, and How We Research and Verify Every Question.
  • Every guide now carries a byline, a publication and update date, a reading time, a table of contents and its own frequently asked questions.
  • The six game pages gained substantially longer, game specific written sections covering how each game works, what is in the dataset and how the answers are sourced.
  • This release notes page was published, so corrections have a permanent public home.
  • Em dashes were removed from site copy in favour of ordinary punctuation.
  • Guides are now linked at clean URLs without the .html suffix, removing a redirect on every guide link, and wide tables read properly on a phone.

2.17.1 (July 2026)

  • Fixed a redirect loop that made /about unreachable shortly after it launched.

2.17.0 (July 2026)

  • The long article that sat below the games on the home page moved to its own page at /about, so the home page loads as a launcher and the article is easier to read on mobile.
  • Correction: Guess the Year was described as containing 220 questions. It contains 250. The count was corrected wherever it appeared.
  • Added a frequently asked question about playing previous days, which the archive had supported since 2.15.0 without being documented anywhere.

2.16.0 to 2.16.2 (July 2026)

  • Added a playable question directly on the home page, showing today's first question for the first game you have not finished. Answering it counts towards your real daily challenge.
  • Made that panel collapsible after feedback that it took up too much of the screen, and made the collapsed state persist between visits.

2.15.0 (July 2026)

  • Added the daily archive: any of the last 30 days can be replayed from a strip of date chips on each game menu. Archived play never affects your streak, and today's challenge is untouched by it.
  • Accessibility fix: locked achievement badges were failing contrast requirements, measured at roughly 2.5 to 1 against their background. Rebuilt with full contrast labels.
  • Fixed the games list so that assistive technology and AI browsing agents read each game as a link again.
  • Added a main landmark to every game page.

2.14.0 to 2.14.2 (July 2026)

  • The 15 achievement badges are now visible on the home page. Previously they could be unlocked but never viewed.
  • Fix: Free Play results were not being recorded in your statistics at all. They now are, and they still never affect the daily streak, which is a daily challenge measure by design.
  • When all six challenges are done, the home banner shows a live countdown to the next set.
  • Game pages load noticeably faster: non critical stylesheets now load asynchronously and the layout no longer shifts as statistics appear.

2.13.0 and 2.13.1 (July 2026)

  • Contrast audit across both themes. Muted text, footer links, filled buttons and badges were all failing the 4.5 to 1 minimum in one theme or the other. All were corrected.
  • Fix: the install prompt in the results dialog was unreadable in dark mode, reported by a player.
  • Data: Who Tweeted expanded from 150 to 165 verified tweets. We stopped at 165 rather than padding the dataset to 250 with tweets we could not document.
  • Visual refresh: pill shaped buttons, softer card corners, tightened headings.

2.12.0 (July 2026)

  • Fix: shared links never showed a preview image on WhatsApp, iMessage or Twitter, because the images were SVG files, which those apps ignore. All preview images are now PNG.
  • Fixed a large layout shift on the home page: the games list is now present in the initial HTML rather than being inserted after load.
  • Added a visible link to the guides section from the home page.

2.11.0 (July 2026)

  • Added a streak reminder to the results screen and an optional install prompt for the app version.
  • Published a machine readable site description for AI assistants at /llms.txt.

2.10.0 (July 2026)

  • Added a Play now button to the daily challenges banner, linking to the first game you have not finished.
  • Reordered the game cards by how much they are actually played, and removed a New badge that had been stale for months.

2.9.0 (July 2026)

  • Data: Guess the Year expanded from 220 to 250 questions, all documented events, checked against the existing set for duplicates.
  • Fix: Guess the Capital could leave you stranded on the game screen after closing the results dialog.
  • Fix: lifetime statistics were only shown in two of the six games. They now appear in all six.
  • Fix: starting a daily challenge you had already completed produced a browser alert instead of reopening your results.
  • Removed three test pages that had been shipped by mistake.

2.8.0 (June 2026)

  • Launched the guides section with six original long form articles, one themed around each game.

2.7.0 (June 2026)

  • Added substantial written content to the home page and all six game pages, explaining how each game works and what is in each dataset.

2.6.0 (May 2026: the data audit)

A full audit of all six datasets, and the single largest set of corrections we have made. Every one of these was a real error that reached players.

  • Guess the Capital: 62 entries were duplicates of other entries, meaning the dataset was materially smaller than its stated 250. All 62 were replaced with genuine, distinct countries and territories.
  • Guess the Capital: Bolivia's capital was recorded as La Paz and is now Sucre, its constitutional capital. Sri Lanka's was recorded as Colombo and is now Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, its official capital.
  • Guess the Movie: two entries presented television dialogue as film dialogue, one attributed a line to the wrong film, and one was malformed. Twelve duplicated question pairs were removed.
  • Who Said It: 14 quotations appeared more than once, including several attributed three times over. All deduplicated.
  • Who Tweeted: four entries could not be verified as real tweets, including two dated in the future. All four were removed and replaced with documented ones.
  • Guess the Song: one entry named the wrong artist, and one contained placeholder text rather than a real lyric fragment.
  • All six datasets were then validated for sequential identifiers, exactly four options per question, the correct answer being present among those options, and no duplicate questions. That validation now runs before every release.

Earlier releases (March 2026)

  • Fix: daily streaks could break incorrectly because dates were not being zero padded, so 1 May sorted differently from 01 May. This affected every game.
  • Data: the Who Tweeted dataset was replaced in full with 150 documented tweets from 2006 to 2024. All other datasets were expanded from 150 to 250 questions.
  • Correction: a duplicated film quote and an ambiguous lyric that had two defensible answers were both replaced.
  • Added the achievement system, offline support, a countdown to the next daily set and a custom error page.
