The foundations: 1440 to 1800
Everything in this section is about information and authority: who controls what people know, and who is allowed to decide.

The nineteenth century compressed distance. Almost every date below is really a date about speed: of travel, of messages, of production.

Why some of these dates are argued over
Roughly a third of the entries above could defensibly be given a different year. That is not sloppiness in the sources, it is a real property of how history works, and understanding it makes you better at dating things.
- Invention is a sequence, not an event. Conception, prototype, demonstration, patent, first sale and mass adoption can span twenty years. Penicillin was observed in 1928 and mass produced in the 1940s. The telephone, the automobile and the aeroplane all have this shape.
- Priority disputes are common. Several people frequently arrive at the same idea within months, and national traditions credit different ones. The first electric light, the first film projection and the first computer all have competing claimants.
- Processes get compressed into moments. The Reformation, the Industrial Revolution and the fall of communism are all processes that reference works pin to a single dramatic date for convenience.
- Calendars changed. Events before the eighteenth century may be recorded in the Julian or Gregorian calendar, differing by days to weeks, which occasionally shifts an event across a year boundary.
- Announcement and availability differ. Modern technology products are announced, released and made widely available at different times, sometimes in different years and usually in different countries.
A well built quiz avoids the genuinely ambiguous cases and states which step it means for the rest. When we cannot phrase a question so that exactly one year is defensible, the question does not go in.
How to date an event you have never heard of
- Read the technology in the description. Telegraph, radio, television, satellite, web and smartphone each bracket a period. So does the absence of one.
- Read the political geography. Which countries exist, and under which names, is a precise clock. The Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Rhodesia, Zaire and East Germany all have known end dates. Namibia, Eritrea, East Timor and South Sudan have known start dates.
- Read the vocabulary. Institutional language dates itself: League of Nations versus United Nations, the Common Market versus the European Union, Peking versus Beijing.
- Anchor to events you do know. Rather than guessing an absolute year, place the event before or after a fixed point you are sure of. Relative dating is far more reliable than absolute recall, and in a four option question it is usually enough.
- Beware the compression effect. People systematically date recent events as further in the past than they are, and older events as more recent. If your instinct says fifteen years ago, the answer is often twenty five.
- Use round numbers with suspicion. Anniversaries make round years memorable, so 1900, 1950 and 2000 feel like plausible answers more often than they are.

Frequently asked questions
Why do sources disagree about the year an invention happened?
Because an invention is a process, not a moment. A single technology can be conceived one year, demonstrated the next, patented after that, and sold to the public years later. Different sources anchor on different steps. A careful quiz says which step it means, for example first flight, first patent or first commercial sale.
What is the most commonly misdated event in trivia?
The World Wide Web is a strong candidate. It was proposed in 1989, the first website ran in 1991, and the underlying technology was released for free public use in 1993. All three years appear in reference works, and each is correct for a different question.
How can I guess a year I genuinely do not know?
Use the texture of the description. Vocabulary, technology, institutions and the countries involved all narrow a date to a decade or two before you have to commit. A confident guess inside the right decade beats a wild one, and in a four option quiz it usually beats one or two of the distractors outright.
Do historians agree on when the modern era begins?
No, and the disagreement is substantive rather than pedantic. Common candidates are the invention of movable type printing in Europe in the 1440s, the transatlantic voyages of the 1490s, the Reformation from 1517, and the scientific revolution of the seventeenth century. Each choice reflects a different argument about what makes an era modern.
